Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
