Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
