This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
