The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
